IMPORTANT COVID-19 UPDATE
Wednesday, June 03, 2020
Your health is our first priority as we resume care at our imaging facilities. Novant Health will resume routine and non-emergent invasive radiology procedures and diagnostic imaging beginning Monday, May 4.
Screening and diagnostic mammograms begin scheduling on May 4.
To keep everyone safe, maintain physical distancing and reduce contact, we have several new processes in place across our centers:
Screening: All patients, approved visitors and team members receive a temperature screening prior to entering the facility.
Masking: All team members are wearing a mask, and we will ask all patients to bring a mask or cloth face covering with them to their appointment.
Visitor restrictions: We are maintaining our visitor restrictions and ask patients to come alone if possible. If the visitor is the healthcare agent or accompanying a minor child, the visitor will also be screened for temperature and wear a mask.
Clean environment: We have HEPA filters at all imaging locations, and have elevated our cleaning and disinfecting practices.
Personal distancing: We have increased time between appointments for enhanced cleaning and to allow for distancing between patients in our centers.
Dedicated centers: We have locations specifically designated for PUI and COVID-19 patients.
Please visit www.novanthealth.org for additional COVID-19 information.

Your doctor may recommend a breast biopsy to examine the growth more closely than possible with a mammogram. Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center offers stereotactic breast biopsy, an alternative to the traditional surgical biopsy. The procedure uses a special imaging technology to accurately target a questionable lesion, with significantly less pain and no scarring.
In the center of most large bones there is a soft tissue (called bone marrow) that makes about 95 percent of the body's blood cells. The marrow is a network of tissue that contains immature blood cells in an organized structure.
Red bone marrow is the active portion that produces red blood cells, while yellow bone marrow contains fat cells. In adults the red bone marrow is located in the flat bones, such as the upper hip bones and sternum. In children, the red bone marrow is in the long bones, such as the femur.
A bone marrow biopsy involves removing tissue from the red bone marrow to be sent to the lab for microscopic examination. The biopsy is done using a small needle inserted into an age appropriate area (long bone for children, flat bone for adults). A local anesthetic agent may be given before starting the procedure.
Joint aspiration refers to removing fluid from the space around a joint using a needle and syringe. This is usually performed under a local anesthetic to either relieve swelling or to obtain fluid for analysis to diagnose a joint disorder and/or problem.
Joint aspiration is usually performed on the knee. However, fluid can also be removed from other joints, such as the hip, ankle, shoulder, elbow, or wrist.
Other related procedures that may be used to help diagnose joint problems include X-ray, bone scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT scan), arthroscopy, and arthrography. Please see these procedures for additional information.
